Dr. Karoline Pershell, Executive Director of Association for Women in Mathematics
Karoline holds a BS in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee at Martin, where she was also a member of the UTM Rodeo Team as the first full time female bull rider in the collegiate circuit. After finishing her undergraduate degree, she went on to receive an MS and a PhD in Mathematics from Rice University. She has also had the privilege of teaching overseas at Qingdao University in China and at the University of Hyderabad in India as a Fulbright Scholar. While in Hyderabad, in addition to teaching STEM Masters’ students, she was able to interview Indian women on their perception of the gender barriers in math, and presented her work on societal support structures for women in math at the International Conference on Gender Relations in Developing Societies.
In 2013, Karoline was awarded the AAAS Science & Technology Diplomacy Fellowship, through which she joined the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) where she was able to work on a broad range of issues. Her exceptional work at the FSI earned her two Department of State Franklin Awards. After her Fellowship, Dr. Pershell chose to continue her career in industry, while still working to support women in the mathematical sciences. The Association for Women in Mathematics named Dr. Karoline Pershell as its new Executive Director, effective January 15, 2018. Karoline’s work includes supporting the work of the AWM Executive Committee, and strengthening and supporting the non-board volunteer corps for the AWM. Karoline lives in Washington, DC with her husband, young son, and 1.75 dogs.
